Sailor Merman - Sterling silver pin badge
Birmingham’s world famous Jewellery Quarter has been established since 1533 and is still producing around 40% of the UK’s finest jewellery - so where better to go to produce our very own precious metal mermen?
To create our Tops and Tails merman pieces, we have selected high quality sterling silver and cast using traditional techniques, all of which ensures the finest of finishes.
How do we do it?
The story starts with a Neil Hughes Productions male model who is cast by Neil and then photographed by Backface at their state of the art studio in Digbeth, Birmingham.
Backface uses a custom built 3D scanning rig, consisting of 96 high resolution DSLR cameras, to take a photograph at every angle of the model. Their super-computer then gets to work by analysing the photos, identifying over 50 million points and measurements to produce a digital, three dimensional model.
This model is then digitally sculpted into character by artist, Timothy Grant, who then also adds the classic merman tail along with any other details, like hoops or chain fittings for a necklace or cuff links.
This mer-model is then 3D printed in a resin photo polymer, moulds are then taken and waxes created to investment cast in sterling silver by expert 3rd generation casters at A Wardle and Co in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter.
Silver experts out there will appreciate that we actually use 935 silver, a notch above 925, however there is no stamp for that, and they may further appreciate that the silversmiths we employ to hand finish each piece have a combined experience of over 120 years (true story).
They polish, buff and test each piece to perfection, before they are boxed by us and made ready for you.
